Well, I attempted to sell art prints at Marscon this year. While it was a fun convention, I have mixed feelings.
I didn't sell much and barely made my booth fee back (and only because I slashed princes in half today.) I also lost a lot of money stocking up on prints and closing the shop this weekend. I tried not to take it personally, there were three of us in the "artist's alley," and we all did poorly, I think because we were in the auction room, which didn't get much foot traffic. I didn't expect to make bank, but I thought I would do a LITTLE better than that. It was a little disappointing.
BUT, the other two artists were incredibly talented and I enjoyed talking with them. It's so great to talk art (and all the joys and frustrations that come with it), with other artists and people who know exactly what you're talking about. We shared some tips and tricks with each other as well. One of them was Mark Jackson, who's work I've been admiring in my White Wolf books for over fifteen years. I bought his original Anatole painting, so that was a plus.
There were some really kick ass costumes, and I met a lady who might be able to make my faun legs, which I'm pretty excited about.
I don't know if I'll do Marscon again next year, but if I do, I definitely don't want to be in the auction room.
This Is Why We Watermark
I feel the need to go on a little rant about watermarks, art theft and the like.
I am getting sick of people saying, “The watermarks are ugly” or “the watermarks are distracting.”
Yes, I know. I put them there. Believe me, no one on this earth hates those watermarks more than I do. I LOATHE the fact that I have to ruin my own work with unsightly, distracting watermarks.
But do you know why I have to do it? Because people steal. Because if I don’t, someone will use my artwork, sell it on ebay or etsy or tee shirts or pillows or whatever. I’ve had it happen. And they’re making more money off my hard w
Ads
Is it just me or is DA getting out of control with the stupid ads? If this is their plan to force me to buy a premium membership, they can stick it. I wasted my money on that bullshit once and it was a total waste….
Art Thieves
Slightly frustrated with social media lately… mostly Istagram and Deviantart… I see scores of wannabe "artists" and "tattoo artists" copying Scott Campbell and Joe Capobianco and the like (and not giving credit where it's due). Maybe they change the outfit or something but it's quite obvious to me where the original came from. These people do bad copies and get 500 likes on a photo. Meanwhile, I'm busting my ass doing original shit and I'm lucky if I get 15 likes on most things. What gives?
I know we all trace or copy the art of our favorite artists when we're learning, but god damn people, give credit where it's due… Sure
NYCC 2014
So there's a lot of talk about SDCC in my feed. I couldn't get tickets, BUT… I'm going to NYCC… which will be fun cause I've never been to New York. Who else is going/has gone? What have your past experiences been like? Any advice? Anything I should do while I'm in New York?
Still trying to finish putting the costume together. Comic Cons are a fun excuse to dress up. I know it's not really a comic character, but I have all the pirate gear so I may do that one day and on the next day, HOPEFULLY I'll have all my Satyr gear done by then.
